Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has begun erecting a new paint shop on a site in Detroit that will house the city’s first new assembly plant in nearly 30 years.

The 790,000 sq-ft shop will support a $1.6 billion factory on the site of FCA’s former Mack Avenue Engine facility. The complex is expected by the end of 2020 to begin making the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV and a new large SUV model.

FCA announced the new assembly plant project in February as part of a $4.5 billion plan that includes upgrading five other factories in Michigan. The most recent assembly plant in Detroit until now was opened by FCA in 1991.
