Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo self-driving car unit and Renault SA may launch an autonomous vehicle service between Charles de Gaulle airport and Paris.
The proposed 25-mile route would connect the airport to the busy La Defense business district in downtown Paris. The partners aim to introduce the service ahead of the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024.
The project would be supported by various government agencies and consortiums. This includes the SAM (safety and acceptability of autonomous driving and mobility) initiative established in April and a separate €100 million ($110 million) program to develop an infrastructure for autonomous vehicles in metropolitan Paris.
In June, Waymo signed deals with Renault and alliance partner Nissan Motor Co. to develop driverless mobility services in France and Japan. The agreements were Waymo’s first initiatives outside the U.S., where the company has been testing self-driving vehicles with other partners for several years.
