The electric variant of Volkswagen AG’s tiny Up! city car is getting a larger battery that the company says will increase real-world driving 36% to 161 miles.
The next-generation e-Up will be unveiled next week at the Frankfurt auto show. The new model gets a 32.3-kWh lithium-ion battery in place of the current 18.7-kWh unit. The new battery can be replenished to 80% capacity in one hour using a 40-kW charger.
VW says the new e-Up will have more standard safety, convenience and infotainment features. At the same time, pricing will be lowered slightly, thanks to economies of scale achieved through increased production of EV components across VW Group brands.
