Volvo Cars Corp. will rebate customers for charging costs of its plug-in hybrid vehicles during the first year of ownership, starting with 2021 models.

The program doesn’t apply to the XC40 Recharge crossover, the carmaker’s first fully electric vehicle. Volvo will use the Recharge sub-brand on all future EVs and plug-in hybrids.
Buyers of Recharge plug-in hybrids will be refunded electricity costs based on power consumption data derived from Volvo's smartphone app. Volvo’s plug-in hybrid vehicles operate in electric mode about 40% of the time, according to the carmaker.
Volvo, which offers electrified variants of all its models, expects full EVs will account for half of its global sales by 2025. The company plans to launch at least one new EV or plug-in hybrid model every year through 2025.
