Uber Prepares to Map Dallas for Self-Driving Cars

Uber Technologies Inc. will begin mapping the streets of downtown Dallas in November to expand its database for self-driving vehicles.
The high-definition maps will be created via lidar systems in Uber’s autonomous-vehicle test fleet. In Dallas, the vehicles will be operated by a human driver.
The vehicles also will capture various real-world driving scenarios that Uber can model with simulation software or recreate on closed test tracks. The company says it chose Dallas for its modern infrastructure, unique traffic patterns, road characteristics and climate.
The program could eventually lead to autonomous testing in Dallas, but Uber says there are no immediate plans to do so. Uber has taken a cautious approach after a self-driving Uber test car struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz., in March 2018.
After halting all such testing last year, the ride-hailing giant resumed tests on a more limited basis early this year in Pittsburgh
