Tesla Inc.’s new assembly plant in Shanghai has produced its first Model 3 electric sedan body, the Shanghai Daily reports.
Tesla broke ground on the factory eight months ago, targeting the launch of low-volume production by year-end. Tesla has said the plant eventually will be able to produce as many as 300,000 EVs annually. The complex also may add battery assembly operations once vehicle output ramps up.
Tesla will use the plant initially to build Model 3 sedans for the Chinese market. The facility is likely to add the company’s upcoming Model Y small crossover vehicle. CEO Elon Musk has said the Shanghai factory one day will supply other markets in Asia too.
