Shanghai Okays Passengers in Robotic Cars

Shanghai has given three companies permission to carry passengers in their self-driving cars, says the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
The operating licenses were granted to BMW, SAIC and ride-hailing company DiDi Chuxing. Each will be allowed to operate as many as 50 self-driving cars in Shanghai’s Jiading district.
The licenses stipulate that their recipients complete at least 24,000 km (14,900 miles) and 1,200 hours of testing in the Jiading district without passengers on board, Xinhau says.
The Financial Times notes that BMW says such tests will enable it to evaluate its autonomous-driving technology in what it describes as “the most complicated traffic scenarios in the world.” DiDi Chuxing said last month that it aims to launch a fleet of robo-taxis the district.
