PSA Group’s Opel unit says it will eliminate the night shift for six months at its main assembly plant in Russelsheim, Germany.
The move, apparently prompted by slumping sales, will idle about 2,600 workers, Reuters reports. The factory currently makes the insignia midsize sedan and Zafira minivan, and it is scheduled to add the next-generation Astra sedan in 2021.
Market researcher JATO Dynamics calculates that European demand for the Insignia and Zafira plunged 36% and 58%, respectively through the first half of 2019.
