Hyundai Mobis Teams with Velodyne on Lidar Tech

Hyundai Mobis Co. has agreed to work with Velodyne Lidar Inc. to supply lidar systems for Level 3 autonomous vehicles starting in 2021.
The first applications for the system, which will team Velodyne sensors with Hyundai Mobis processing software, will be for vehicles sold in Asia. Availability in North America and Europe will follow later.
As part of the partnership, the South Korean supplier is investing $50 million in Velodyne.
San Jose, Calif.-based Velodyne has supplied most of the lidar used in initial prototype self-driving cars. The company boasts that it has more than 250 customers worldwide.
Last year Velodyne opened a factory in California, where it aims to eventually produce one million lidar units annually. The company also has manufacturing partnerships with Nikon and Veoneer, which was spun off from Autoliv in 2018. Velodyne also is said to be considering a public stock offering.
