Honda Motor Co. confirms it will stop selling diesel-powered vehicles in Europe in 2021 as it moves to more electrified powertrains.
The company announced the plan last November. It began switching from diesel to hybrid systems in March, when its new CR-V crossover debuted in Europe.
Over the next two years, the company will do the same as it refreshes its Civic hatchback and HR-V small crossover. Honda also is launching its first full-electric model, the Urban city car it presented in production form this month at the Frankfurt auto show.
Last year, Honda estimated that two-thirds of the vehicles it sells in Europe will be electrified by 2025. Now it says all its models will offer an electrified powertrain option by then.
Last year Honda sold 135,600 vehicles in Europe, down 3%. Sales through the first eight months of 2019 dropped 14% to 80,700 units.
