Uber Technologies Inc., which laid off one-third of its 1,200-member global marketing team last month, has hired Thomas Ranese to head the ride-hailing company’s global product and brand marketing efforts.

Ranese will report to senior vice president Jill Hazelbaker, who added marketing responsibilities to her public relations duties after former chief marketing officer Rebecca Messina departed in June. At that time, Mike Strickman was appointed to lead Uber’s performance marketing team.
Ranese was a senior executive at Google Inc. for 10 years. Most recently he headed marketing for the company’s global hardware business. He previously was the marketing chief for the state of New York, where he revived the popular “I Love NY” campaign.
