FCA Plans $1 Billion Upgrade for Pomigliano Plant

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will invest nearly €1 billion to upgrade its assembly plant in Pomigliano, Italy, according to a joint union statement.
Reuters says the work will begin in early 2020. The facility, once FCA’s least productive factory in Italy, received a €700 million ($772 million) overhaul in 2011 to build the current-generation Panda minicar.
Reuters says the new upgrade will enable Pomigliano to add a hybrid version of the Panda next summer and launch the all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale small crossover vehicle (pictured) in the first half of 2021.
Alfa unveiled the Tonale, which will fit into the company’s product lineup below the Stelvio SUV, in March at the Geneva auto show.
