Daimler May Face Sprinter Recall on Diesels

Daimler AG may be ordered to recall 260,000 of its diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter commercial vans because they are equipped with illegal emission control software, says Bild am Sonntag, which cites no sources.
Daimler confirms to Reuters that German transport authority KBA has requested a hearing regarding the previous-generation vans, which went out of production three years ago. KBA says the disputed software allows emissions of nitrogen oxide significantly greater than allowed under European Union pollution laws.
The targeted software also has been used in some of the company’s other diesel models, according to Daimler.
Last month prosecutors in Germany levied a “negligent violation” fine against Daimler for €870 million ($958 million) regarding excess NOx emissions from 684,000 diesel-powered Mercedes cars, vans and SUVs produced from 2008. It isn’t clear whether the vans referred to by Bild are among the vehicles covered by the September fine.
Daimler previously has recalled nearly 3.8 million diesels in Europe to update its NOx control software.
