2020 VW Models Add Remote Capabilities

Volkswagen AG is introducing an upgraded version of its Car-Net telematics system on 2020-model VW vehicles in the U.S.
The expanded technology will allow users to remotely control a variety of vehicle systems via a smartphone app. This includes starting the engine, locking/ unlocking the doors, honking the horn and flashing the lights.
The app also is able to show where a vehicle is parked and provide remote information on fuel level, odometer reading and whether the doors and windows are open or closed. Delivery services also can use the system to load packages in a vehicle when the owner isn’t present.
The system automatically generates monthly vehicle health reports and prompts owners to schedule service visits for recommended intervals. Vehicle owners also can enroll in a driving monitor program—tracking excessive speed, hard braking and other risk factors—that insurance companies could use to reduce rates for good drivers.
The upgraded system will be standard on mid- and upper-trim levels for most 2020-model Volkswagen vehicles. The base service is free for five years. Emergency roadside assistance, stolen vehicle location and other features are part of an annual subscription package.
